Saintes is an old Roman town, so it abounds in Roman remains, particularly around the river.

There is a well preserved amphitheatre and east of Saintes in Saint Césaire, the new Paleosite (April,  May, June and September: 10:00-19:00, July & August: 10:00-20:00, Adults 9€ and Children (7-14) 5.50€).

The Paleosite is one of the largest ‘digs’ in Europe and now has some very high-tech and interesting visitor facilities.

Saintes has extensive shopping, particularly ‘expensive’ shops for gifts and many bars, restaurants and cafes.

There are river trips on the Charente during the Summer and the town also has a fine golf course.
