Large beach resort, very popular with the French and quite crowded during the summer. Excellent beaches both in Royan and St. Georges de Didonne.
Slightly faded grandeur but good restaurants, cafes and shops. St. Georges also has a new Parc de L’Estuaire exhibiting natural history information about the Gironde estuary. (0033 (0)546 05 09 73).
One of the more significant attractions in Royan are Les Jardins de Monde – a themed garden attraction (0033 (0)546 38 00 99).
Further up the coast at La Palmyre is an excellent zoo, very good for the children. You can get exceptionally close to the animals and they have a very good seal show. (0033 (0)546 22 46 06)).
